WINDSHIELD AND DASH CAP

The upholstered panel mounted above the dash and behind the windshield was particularly difficult to fabricate because the original plywood base had decomposed beyond using it as a pattern.  The process required a trial and error effort, but we completed the task today.
The new plywood base, pictured to the right, is ready to cover.

The original dash pad was covered with a felt like material serving as padding.  We substituted 1/8 inch felt purchased from the local hobby shop.

The felt was applied to the plywood using a 3M upholstery adhesive and allowed to cure.  You will notice the defroster vent slots cut in the plywood.  The felt and upholstery material will be removed tomorrow.

The photo to the left shows the finished dash pad complete with the "Healey air bag".  The dash pad is now ready to install.

After the windshield was assembled, we fitted it to the car temporarily...just to make sure there were no surprises.  The windshield will be re-installed after the dash pad is fitted.  This process will be completed Monday morning.

The archive listing of this blog contains detailed step-by-step photos and narratives regarding this restoration since it began late last December.  Please direct any comments and questions to tommystoplesscars@yahoo.com.
